Abstract

Since its beginning Reference Service (RS) has been gone through successive modifications, trying to adapt to the continuous evolution of society and to the different needs of library users. In several countries this service assumes a vital role as an information mediator service, presenting unique characteristics on the interaction with users and the expert assistance that it provides them. Considering the international development of RS and the lack of studies in Portugal on this subject, the research O Serviço de Referência nas Bibliotecas Públicas em Portugal, caracterização actual e perspectivas de desenvolvimento analyses the situation of the SR in public libraries on the RNBP (Rede Nacional de Bibliotecas Públicas). Due to a situation of some delay in the development of this service in public libraries in Portugal, it was possible to observe the urgent need for more research to contribute to its development. The research O Serviço de Referência nas bibliotecas públicas, modelo de desenvolviment, a current research from the University of évora, searches, thus, through an analysis of the RUSA (Reference and User Services Association/American Library Association) and IFLA (International Federation of Library Association) international guidelines on the SR, updating the knowledge and contributing to the development of this service. This communication aims to present a synthesis of the results obtained in the initial study on the SR in public libraries and to show the main aspects of the present research.
